City funds high-tech helmets for Cordova High football
Head injury and concussions are a great concern among parents, leagues, and schools – especially at the youth and high school levels. Thanks to a grant from the City of Rancho Cordova, both the JV and Varsity football teams at Cordova High School will be wearing helmet technology that keeps them safer: 94 student-athletes will be wearing helmet-based head impact monitoring technology that is designed to alert coaches and trainers when significant impacts are sustained on the field.
The technology from Riddell measures head impact severity, and when an impact exceeds a predetermined threshold, an alert is transmitted to the sideline staff who can then examine the player for symptoms of a concussion. Riddell believes the City of Rancho Cordova is the first city in the nation to fund the cost of this helmet technology to keeps its students safer.
This grant was made possible through the City’s Community Enhancement Fund, which is supported by a voter-approved 1/2 cent local sales tax.
