FCUSD leads the region in civic learning!

Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero recently named recipients of the 2023 Civic Learning Awards. Of the 33 schools honored in one of four categories, five are from Sacramento County, and four are from FCUSD!

The awards, co-sponsored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, recognize schoolwide achievements in civics, and celebrate successful efforts to engage students in civic learning. To apply, school applicants described how schoolwide policy and practices helped support and expand civics in and out of the classroom. Some areas of focus included detailing their discussions of current events and controversial issues, and extracurricular activities that gave students opportunities to get involved in their school, community, and local government. All applications were scored by educators and representatives from the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Judicial Branch.

Innovations Academy earned a Civic Learning Award of Distinction. Additional 2023 Civic Learning Awards from schools within FCUSD include:

  • Award of Merit
    Vista del Lago High School

  • Honorable Mention
    Cordova High School
    Folsom High School

We are #FCUSDproud of students and staff for their dedication to civic education.
