PHOTOS: Mills students attend “tiny house” competition
Nearly three dozen Mills Middle School students got a first-hand look at the surging “tiny house” movement and met college students who build them during a special event earlier this month at Cosumnes River College.
The Tiny House Competition, sponsored by the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, gave students the opportunity to not only tour the micro-abodes, but also participate in solar energy activities, build tiny bird houses, and admire electric vehicles.
Teachers Justin Smith and Stephanie Bird have long wanted to take Mills students to the event, as Bird has students design tiny homes for their PLTW (Project Lead the Way) Green Architecture unity. Smith and his wife, Melissa, also live in a tiny house and gave a presentation to a packed audience at the SMUD event.
