Community Readers Program wins award for helping students succeed
Folsom Cordova's Community Readers program (https://www.fcusd.org/communityreaders ) was honored last month for program improvements that have increased student success rates and strengthened local partnerships.
Community Readers, a volunteer tutoring program that helps students struggling to read, received a 2017 Influence Award from the Public Relations Society of America California Capital Chapter, the Sacramento region's leading organization of public relations and communication professionals. Judges noted several measureable outcomes from a strategic overhaul of the program in 2016-17, including:
- Average percentage increase in student assessments was 41%
- By spring 2017 the program established or grew strategic community partnerships by 5 using the program as a leverage point
- Community Readers grew its volunteer base by 29
- Volunteers and school staff members reported high levels of satisfaction in the program
The award was accepted by Angela Griffin Ankhelyi, FCUSD's Community Outreach Coordinator, during an Oct. 26 ceremony at the California Museum.
