On May 5-6, the State History competition was held at William Jessup University and had over 1,400 students competing. Folsom Cordova sponsored 43 elementary, middle and high school students in the competition. Students were evaluated by professional historians and educators. The champions from the state will be invited to advance to the National History competition held at the University of Maryland, in College Park, Maryland. Results from the competition are pending.
This year, the District's history competition began at Folsom Middle School. On March 3, students moved on to the Sacramento County competition which was hosted by Inderkum High School, in Sacramento. Folsom Cordova Unified School District was incredibly successful in the county competition, earning not only champion and runner up accolades, but many special awards as well.
National History Day is a year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, State, National, and World History. After selecting a historical topic that relates to the 2018 theme of Conflict and Compromise, students, along with their site coach, conduct an extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions regarding their topics' significance in history, and create final projects that represent their work.
