State names Vista del Lago High a Gold Ribbon School
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced on April 18 that Vista del Lago High School is one of 275 secondary schools being honored with a Gold Ribbon Schools Award.
Over 477 schools applied for the Gold Ribbon Schools Award. The award recognizes California schools that have made significant gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
"This award is a direct result of the dedication and hard work of Vista del Lago teachers and staff members. We understand the importance of students succeeding, not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well," said Principal Lori Emmington. "Our school-wide Advistory Program at Vista del Lago is designed to ensure every student is supported in these three areas, which has led to an inclusive and supportive school culture."
The state called out Vista del Lago's weekly Advisory Program as a model for other schools to emulate. The purpose of Advisory is to
- create positive and caring relationships among staff and students, which promotes an emotionally and physically safe environment for all students;
- establish a support system to promote high levels of learning for all students;
- and provide schoolwide exposure to relevant and important issues, which include college and career readiness.
