Parents & community dig into school performance, safety plans
Folsom Cordova families, community members, and employees had the chance to explore and discuss school performance data last week. The same day, in a separate gathering, groups dug deeper into school safety plans and provided feedback on areas of improvement.
Both opportunities were part of the District’s ongoing efforts to include its stakeholders in the decision-making process.
School performance data: During her quarterly Superintendent’s Communication Committee meeting on Dec. 7 - a group made of parent leaders from each of the District’s 32 schools - Dr. Sarah Koligian co-facilitated an activity in which participants broke into small groups, examining and discussing trends in school performance data.
Areas of focus included English-language arts performance, mathematics performance, English learner progress, and suspension data. On large posters, parents could see how well FCUSD’s individual schools were performing over time, as well as the performance of student subgroups - African Americans, students with disabilities, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and others.
The data was pulled from the state’s new school accountability measures: the California Dashboard, and the Five-by-Five reports that show changes over time. Families and community members can use both to search for information about their own school.
School safety plans: Also on Dec. 7, the superintendent kicked off the District’s first Safety Committee meeting. Dr. Koligian formed the group - which includes school administrators, teachers, parents, and law enforcement - to provide ongoing review of the District’s safety and emergency planning.
In its first meeting, the group reviewed the District’s active shooter training and emergency response preparation and discussed areas of potential improvement.
Afterward, participants split into groups and reviewed individual school site safety plans, asking questions and recommending revisions. (Parents can request to view a school’s safety plan by contacting their school’s front office.)
