Important update on new immunization requirements
Earlier this summer, Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 277 into law, eliminating the personal belief exemption from the vaccine requirement for school-age children. Please note: This change does not take effect until the 2016-17 school year. No immediate changes are taking effect.
Here are some answers to common questions you may have:
What’s changing?
As of the 2016-17 school year, parents/guardians will be required to show proof that their child has received the vaccinations required to attend school (scroll down for a complete list). Unless the student has a medical exemption, families can no longer file a personal belief exemption.
What if I already have a personal belief form on file?
Students with personal belief exemptions on file before Jan. 1, 2016 will have until the child enrolls in the next grade (kindergarten and seventh grade) to fulfill the immunization requirement.
If a student is entering either kindergarten or Grade 7 in the 2016-17 school year, the personal belief exemption no longer applies.
If a student is entering Grades 1-6 in the 2016-17 school year, their personal belief exemption will continue to apply until the student enters Grade 7.
What about medical exemptions?
Medical exemptions still apply under the new law. If a parent or guardian decides to seek a medical exemption, they must file a written statement by a licensed physician which describes the medical circumstances that make immunizations unsafe for your child.
The 10 immunizations required to enroll in public school are:
- diphtheria
- haemophilus
- influenza type B
- measles
- mumps
- pertussis (whooping cough for children entering grade 7)
- polio
- rubella
- tetanus Hepatitis B
- varicella (chickenpox)
