More Folsom Cordova students meeting, exceeding state standards
Folsom Cordova students continue to make gains in literacy and math, outpacing average performance locally and across California, according to state test results released this week.
Among the students in grades 3-8 and 11 who took last spring’s Smarter Balanced assessments last spring - one part of California’s comprehensive testing program - 64% of students met or exceeded English-language arts standards. That’s up 5% in the past two years.
In math, 53% of students met or exceeded rigorous math standards, up 3% in the past two years.
Among additional highlights:
Some of our most challenged schools and student populations, where we invest additional academic and enrichment resources, experienced continued growth:
- English learners, economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities all saw continued growth in English-language arts performance.
- High-poverty schools including Cordova Gardens, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa and White Rock elementary schools saw English-language arts performance growth anywhere from 7-10% in the last year.
- The research shows that early learning is critical to long-term student success, and Folsom Cordova’s continued focus in elementary is showing promise: 90% of elementary schools increased performance in English-language arts, and 80% increased in math.
These test results highlight challenge areas that require increased focus:
- Mirroring a statewide trend, FCUSD saw a 4% drop in 11th grade English-language arts performance over the last year.
- Math performance among seventh-graders, English learners, and students with disabilities declined slightly over the past year.
- Like schools across the state and nation, achievement gaps among our students of color - who are more likely to be living in poverty or learning English than their peers - continue to persist and must be targeted.
The District’s renewed focus on the “ABCs” - Attendance, Budget, and Culture - will help us strengthen conditions for continued learning success:
- Attendance: We are creating a districtwide Attendance Action Plan to ensure more students are in class every day and on time so they don’t fall behind.
- Budget: Keeping a close eye on every dollar to ensure we are maximizing the resources we have to support student success is a top priority.
- Culture: Students cannot learn in an environment where they do not have trusted adults in their lives. Our increased investments in social-emotional learning will help build positive relationships in our school communities that also impact student achievement.
