Part of The National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14, multiple fire agencies (Metro Fire, Sacramento Fire, Cosumnes Fire, Folsom Fire, West Sac Fire) are working together and reaching out to students from Pre-K to sixth grade of the Sacramento County community to help promote fire safety starting with the younger generations.
The goal of Sacramento Metro Fire Department is to promote the NFPA's (National Fire Protection Association) message of the year which is "every second counts, plan two ways out" which emphasizes the importance of planning what to do in case of a fire disaster striking a families home.
To promote their message, different firefighter teams went out to elementary schools in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District. Arriving on site in fully loaded fire trucks, firefighters went to talk to students and inform them on this year's message as well as other general fire safety. Teams visited Cordova Meadows, Williamson, and White Rock Elementary Schools.
While on site, the fire department had some fun with the students as well, holding a coloring contest where the firefighters asked students to depict the theme of this years Fire Safety Week and what it meant to them. Firefighters also gave the students a take home challenge in which students were tasked create and practice a home escape plan with their families. Multiple winners will be announced at a ceremony, and two grand prize winners (one from each contest) will receive a grand prize of getting a pizza party with firefighters for their class and a $100 gift card for their school.
While these teams and firefighters have so far only visited schools in the FCUSD, the contest is open to anyone. Posters must be turned into Jennifer Rubin, Safe Kids Greater Sacramento, 6501 Coyle Ave, Carmichael, CA 95608, by November 3rd.
