Folsom Cordova educators go the distance for literacy program
Folsom Cordova educators are known for going the extra mile for their students. But 24 employees are going even further - swimming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13.1 miles, in fact – to support literacy.
When these teachers, administrators, and staff members compete in the Challenge Rancho Cordova triathlon on Oct. 5, they also hope to have collected 1,000 books for children in need.
The team is accepting new and gently used children’s books through Oct. 3. Collection bins are located in multiple locations in Rancho Cordova, including:
- FCUSD’s Education Services Center, 1965 Birkmont Drive
- Rancho Cordova City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive
- Rancho Cordova Police Department, 2897 Kilgore Road
The books will be used to build the personal libraries of children in need through the Community Readers Program, an ongoing effort that allows community members and volunteers to work one-on-one with young students struggling to read at grade level.
“We wanted to not only challenge ourselves as athletes, but we also wanted to use the event to build awareness about the district’s Community Readers Program,” said Lori Emmington, Vista del Lago High School’s vice principal – and an avid cyclist racing in the triathlon.
Angela Griffin Ankhelyi, the District’s community outreach coordinator who not only oversees Community Readers, but will also be running in the triathlon, said “team members wanted to parlay their efforts into something that could benefit kids.”
“Their dedication to students does not stop when the bell rings,” she said.
