McKinney-Vento Enrollment: Education Without Barriers
Enrolling in school is a fundamental right, regardless of your housing situation. Under the federal McKinney-Vento Act and California state law, you are guaranteed enrollment in school if you face uncertain housing, have a temporary address, or lack a permanent address.
Who is Eligible: You have the right to enroll in school if you find yourself living in any of the following circumstances:
- In a shelter, whether it's a family, domestic violence, youth shelter, or transitional living program.
- In a motel, hotel, or weekly rate housing.
- In a house or apartment with more than one family due to economic hardship or loss.
- In an abandoned building, car, campground, or on the street.
- In temporary foster care or under the care of an adult who is not your parent or guardian.
- In substandard housing without electricity, water, or heat.
- With friends or family because you are a runaway or an unaccompanied youth.
What You Don't Need to Provide: Enrolling in school under these conditions does not require you to provide:
- Proof of residency.
- Immunization records or tuberculosis skin-test results.
- School records.
- Legal guardianship papers.
Your Rights and Benefits: Upon enrolling under McKinney-Vento, you're entitled to the following:
- Full participation in all eligible school activities and programs.
- Continued attendance at your previous school, even if you've moved away from its attendance zone or district.
- Transportation from your current residence back to your school of origin.
- Automatic qualifications for child nutrition programs, including free and reduced-price lunches.
- Access to the district liaison for resolving any disputes during the enrollment process
We believe that education should never be hindered by housing challenges. The McKinney-Vento Act ensures that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Contact us today to explore your educational options and embark on a journey of empowerment through education.
Together, we're breaking down barriers to education.
