Career Technical Education (CTE) is a program of study that includes a multi-year sequence of courses integrating academic and technical instruction to prepare students for postsecondary education and careers. CTE pathways provide real-world learning experiences that support college and career readiness. Many CTE programs align with STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

Key components of CTE programs include:

  • High-quality curriculum and instruction: Alignment with California Career Ready Practices, New Generation Science Standards (NGSS), CTE Pathway Standards, Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Industry Standards, and the 11 Elements of High-Quality CTE Programs.
  • Inquiry-based learning: Use of essential questions, student learning targets, and product- or performance-based assessments.
  • Project-based learning: Hands-on experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Career exploration and guidance: Work-based learning opportunities that develop employability skills through mentoring, internships, and career exploration activities.
  • Course sequences: Multi-level pathways that guide students from introductory to concentrator and capstone courses.
  • Student leadership development: Participation in Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) such as DECA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA.
  • Industry certifications: Opportunities for students to earn recognized industry credentials.
  • Industry partnerships: Advisory meetings, internships, community classroom experiences, guest speakers, field trips, and work-based learning opportunities.
  • College credit opportunities: Dual Enrollment college courses with local community colleges.
  • A-G approved courses: Coursework that meets University of California A-G admission requirements.
