Music Class Options

Elementary Music Program

4th Grade Course Options

General Music:
Open to all students, this class covers basic music skills including singing, rhythm, movement, listening, and recorder playing.

  • Practice: Some practice required
  • Materials: Recorder and book (provided; usually kept at school)
  • Instrument: Recorder

Instrument Class (Strings):
This optional class may be chosen instead of General Music. It requires a strong commitment.

  • Practice: 15–20 minutes, 5 days per week
  • Commitment: Full school year
  • Instruments: Violin, Viola, or Cello
  • Students learn music reading, technique, and tone production
  • Instruments may be rented, purchased, or borrowed (limited supply; choice not guaranteed)

Instrument Responsibility: Students are expected to bring their instrument and book on music days. Regular practice and organization are essential for progress. Forgetting an instrument limits learning.

Looking Ahead: Students must take Beginning Strings in 4th grade to enroll in Intermediate Strings in 5th grade.

 

5th Grade Course Options

Choir:
Open to all students, this class covers basic music skills including singing, rhythm, movement, listening, and ensemble.

  • Practice: Some practice required
  • Materials: Music provided 
  • Instrument: Voice

Instrument Class (Strings): This optional class may be chosen instead of Choir. Students must have taken Beginning Strings in 4th grade to enroll in Intermediate Strings in 5th grade.It requires a strong commitment.

  • Practice: 15–20 minutes, 5 days per week
  • Commitment: Full school year
  • Instruments: Violin, Viola, or Cello
  • Students learn music reading, technique, and tone production
  • Instruments may be rented, purchased, or borrowed (limited supply; choice not guaranteed)
