TRANSPORTATION UPDATES FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR

On June 20, 2024, the Board of Education determined that due to operational costs and efficiencies, including staffing, the district shall enforce the current guidelines for determining transportation qualifications.

Transportation Eligibility

Distance shall be calculated from the student’s verified home address as recorded in the district’s student information system to the school of attendance using a straight-line radius measurement determined through the district’s geographic information system or other standardized measurement method established by the Superintendent or designee.

Students shall be eligible for transportation service to and from school if the distance between the student’s home address and the school exceeds the minimum listed below:

  • Elementary school students (grades K-5): three-fourths (¾) mile radius
  • Secondary students attending a three-year middle school (grades 6 - 8): three (3) miles radius
  • Secondary students attending a four-year high school (grades 9 - 12): four (4) miles radius

The radius measurement establishes a consistent districtwide eligibility standard, recognizing that actual walking or driving distances may exceed the measured radius. This method is applied uniformly to ensure clarity, fairness, and administrative efficiency.

The following transportation services are mandatory and must be provided:

  • McKinney-Vento students (Homeless Education Act)
  • Special Education students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that includes transportation services
  • Transportation for foster youth to attend their school of origin when determined to be in the student’s best interest.

Highest Priority for Transportation Services:

  • Socio-economically disadvantaged students residing outside the designated service area, per Education Code 39800.1.
  • District-required overflow students who have been placed at a school other than their home school.

Services Dependent on Staffing and Budget Availability

Transportation may be provided if resources allow:

  • Students in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1–6.
  • Title I school students residing within non-service areas, based on targeted needs such as chronic absenteeism
  • General education students living outside of the service area who opt into paid transportation services

Important Exclusions:

Please note that transportation is not provided for the following:

  • Students attending a school of choice that is not their designated home school
  • Students attending school on an inter-district transfer
