Positive Prevention Plus

Our district’s health curriculum is designed to meet the legal requirements of Health Education in California, as outlined in the California Healthy Youth Act. This act mandates that all students in grades seven to twelve receive comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education that is medically accurate, appropriate for their age, and inclusive of different sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. By providing this education, students can develop the skills necessary to have healthy, positive, safe relationships and behaviors. Our curriculum ensures that students receive this instruction in their 7th grade science class, and high school Health courses, in accordance with the California Healthy Youth Act. As stated by the State Superintendent of Education, this curriculum is designed to promote the well-being of our students and prepare them for a healthy and successful future. Our district is committed to providing inclusive and comprehensive health education to all students. In alignment with the California Healthy Youth Act and Education Code 51930, our district board policies, including Board Policy 6142.1 on Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Instruction, require that our instruction and materials promote healthy attitudes towards gender and sexual orientation. We prioritize teaching students about gender, gender expression, and identity, while also providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their sexual health.

Our Board Policy 0415 on Equity also commits to policy and practices for eliminating predictable opportunity gaps based on gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation, including supporting programs that respond to the diverse needs of our students. This policy requires that we provide each student with opportunities that prepare them for a productive life, including culturally relevant and responsive instruction, such as that found in our health instruction. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and respected.
