ATOD Prevention

Mission

FCUSD's Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program activities are supported through a competitive grant application process that was awarded through the California Department of Education (CDE). This grant funding is a result of the Proposition 99 funds that are allocated to Tobacco prevention in schools. The purpose of the TUPE program is to reduce youth tobacco use by helping young people make healthful tobacco-related decisions through tobacco specific, research-validated educational instruction and activities that build knowledge as well as social skills and youth development assets. Collaboration with community-based tobacco control program is an integral part of program planning. The Program is designed to address prevention education, intervention, tobacco cessation and positive youth development in grades 4-12.

Club Live: Mills, Mitchell, Sutter and Folsom Middle

Friday Night Live: CHS and FHS

These middle and high school clubs consist of enthusiastic youth, working in partnership with adults, to create powerful activities that improve the school and community. Students learn a variety of leadership skills while in a safe and engaging environment that allows them to carry out short and longer term projects. They are committed to building healthy environments that are free of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.

BRO: Bulldogs Reaching Out: Folsom High

This peer education club consists of high school students trained in substance abuse refusal skills, presentation delivery and tobacco, alcohol and other drugs so they can present prevention lessons to younger students throughout the district. Approximately 160 student leaders go to middle and elementary schools annually, serving as positive role models, to deliver a powerful message about making healthy choices.

Addiction support in the school setting can take many forms, reflecting the diverse needs of students and families. Schools provide a continuum of care that may include early prevention education, brief interventions, and connections to community-based treatment services. Support can look like one-on-one counseling, small group sessions, social-emotional learning, or check-ins with trusted staff such as school nurses, counselors, or wellness teams. In some cases, schools partner with outside providers to offer on-site or virtual services, helping reduce barriers to care.

Just as important, schools create safe, supportive environments where students feel seen, heard, and encouraged to make healthy choices.

School Intervention

Alternative-to-Suspension Program

Students can complete this new interactive online, self-paced course independently.
The one-hour "My Healthy Future" self-paced course provides students an opportunity to reflect on their future health and wellness.
- Topics include the impacts of vaping on the body, why addiction happens, preparing the mindset for quitting, negative and positive stress, developing coping strategies, supports and learning about cessation resources.

This course is for any student caught using tobacco/vaping on the school campus, or anyone working with students who want to quit.

Brief Intervention

Three-session intervention utilizing motivational interviewing and CBT, for tobacco, marijuana and alcohol-related incidents. Includes: building relationships, exploring relationships to substance, setting goals and supporting motivation for change. The third session is an optional parent session. There is a 1-6 month student follow-up session "check-in".
