FCUSD Statement on the conflict in Israel/Gaza

Dear FCUSD Community:

California is home to students and staff with cultural and/or religious ties to Israel and Palestine. The terrorist attack instigated by Hamas against Israel and the resulting declaration of war by Israel against Hamas in the Gaza Strip has led to numerous horrific casualties and injuries on both sides. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the conflict. 

Our area is home to students who may be deeply affected by current events, a rise in Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents and may have had previous exposure to violence in their home country. We aim to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.

In these challenging times, it is crucial for educators and families to have access to appropriate resources to engage in meaningful discussions with students, to talk about their feelings, to resolve conflicts peacefully, and to share any worries about the events in Israel and Gaza.  

As is the case with other violence around the world, it is likely that our students have access to unprecedented levels of information and potential misinformation on television and on social media. In addition, graphic images and footage of violent conflicts are not easy to process, especially for children and youth. It's even more difficult for those who have experienced trauma or witnessed violence themselves. 

When larger world events occur, tensions can be strongly felt by students, families, and staff at school. We want to remind everyone that FCUSD has clear behavior expectations focusing on respect and civility. Feel free to review the Parent’s Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and Student Code of Conduct 2023-2024. Please help your schools by focusing on positive support during times of crisis.

Please also know that FCUSD has Mental Health Professionals available at schools for students who are experiencing stress or anxiety due to the ongoing situation.
