Board Briefs and Updates, March 8
March 8, 2024

Dear FCUSD Community: Please read a recap of last night's Board Meeting as well as details about an upcoming parent awareness session focusing on the risks associated with marijuana.

Recognition of National Board Certificated Teachers

National Board Certification is the most respected and rigorous professional certification available in education, a process that can take multiple years and hundreds of hours to complete. FCUSD leads the region for having the most National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT)!

At last night’s Board Meeting, we celebrated our latest NBCT certified teachers and honored those who have earned this prestigious certification.

Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) & Robotics High School Presentation

Secondary STEM and Robotics are flourishing in Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathways at Cordova High, Folsom High, and Vista del Lago and with growing programs at middle schools across the District. High school teachers shared highlights of student learning, examples of projects, local and state competitions, and how high schoolers are working with younger students to inspire a love for STEM learning. Enhanced Opportunities at Rancho Cordova Schools

Special presentations were given by two schools, Rancho Cordova Elementary and Williamson Elementary. Student achievements, enrichments, and successes were noted, as were highlights on the ways supplemental funding can enhance Community Schools learning opportunities.

Superintendent Search Update

Representatives from search firm McPherson & Jacobson, LLC provided an update on the search for the next Folsom Cordova Unified School District Superintendent and a summary from the stakeholder input community forums and online survey. Documents presented may be found below and will be posted on our website at www.fcusd.org. As noted in the calendar, the goal is to have a Superintendent identified by May with a start date of July 1.

2023-2024 Second Interim Financial Report

Staff provided the Second Interim Financial Report, for the Period Ending January 31, 2024, and Board approved a positive certification. The presentation may be found HERE. Highlights include:

  • Revenue change summary
  • Expenditure change summary
  • Budget summary

 Ethnic Studies Update

Ethnic Studies courses were piloted this year as an elective at Cordova High School, Folsom High School, Vista del Lago High School, and Innovations Academy. The state of California mandated school districts must offer Ethnic Studies to high school students no later than the 2025 - 2026 school year, and it becomes a graduation requirement for students who begin high school in 2026 and after. A district-wide survey to examine this year’s pilot revealed strong support for Ethnic Studies, backed by quantitative and qualitative data, including student testimonials.

Please take a moment to review the presentation that was shared.
