To keep and maintain safe learning environments, FCUSD is reinstating the use of drug-detection K-9s (canines) to conduct searches on school campuses, in accordance with School Board Policy 5145.12: Use of Drug-Detection Dogs (BP-5145.12):

In an effort to keep the schools free of drugs, the district may use specially trained non-aggressive dogs to sniff out and alert staff to the presence of substances prohibited by law or Board policy. The dogs may sniff the air around lockers, desks, or vehicles on district property or at district-sponsored events as long as they are not allowed to sniff within the close proximity of any students. BP 5141.12

The initial phase will concentrate on high school campuses, with FCUSD employing K-9s from law enforcement partners. This K-9 program offers searches of public schools, free of charge, utilizing non-aggressive dogs trained for detecting drugs, weapons, explosives, and other items deemed illegal or against policy. Searches will be coordinated with school site administration.  

In cases where a student's personal belongings are searched, notification of the search and its outcome will be promptly communicated to the parent/guardian. 

These prescribed procedures are anticipated to contribute significantly to the reduction of students engaging in the use of drugs and tobacco, with the overarching goal of eliminating the presence of illicit substances from our campuses.
