Board Briefs and Updates, June 21 2024
Dear FCUSD Community,
Yesterday was the final Board Meeting for the 2023-24 school year. Below is a recap along with information on:
- Firework safety
- Congressional app challenge for secondary students
- Communication for 2024-25
Special thank you to retiring Superintendent Dr. Sarah Koligian
The Board of Education honored Dr. Sarah Koligian with a plaque and words of gratitude as they reminisced about her many accomplishments over the last seven years as the Superintendent. A picture of the moment is captured HERE.
Dr. Koligian will retire on June 30 and we thank her for her dedication to students, staff, and families of FCUSD. Erik Swanson will take over as the District’s Superintendent on July 1.
2024-25 Transportation Updates
Efficiencies for school bus staffing, schedules, and routes for the 2024-25 school year were presented, resulting in time and cost savings. The main changes are:
Adjust drop-off time for elementary sites to 7:45 A.M.
- Sites will ensure student supervision
- This will allow for the streamlining of routes and opportunities for students to access breakfast
Standardize Early Release to the same day districtwide to reduce duplication of routes and have consistent schedules
- This change impacted 25+ routes and reduced student ride time
The enforcement of existing bus service radius from school sites
- This enforcement in 2024-25 will improve operational efficiency and provide a clearer understanding of bus service availability for our families.

Congressional App Challenge
On behalf of Congressman Ami Bera, M.D., and the U.S. House of Representatives, students in grades 6 - 12 next year are invited to participate in the Congressional App Challenge. There are no limits on theme or topic. The deadline to submit is October 24th. Students have the opportunity to create their apps individually or work as a team. Fireworks: Keep it Safe, Keep it Legal
In partnership with neighboring Sacramento area school districts, FCUSD shares the following safety information from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
Each year serious injuries, deaths, and millions of dollars in property loss occur from fires sparked by fireworks. Legal consumer fireworks that comply with Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations can be relatively safe, but all fireworks are hazardous and can cause injury if proper safety measures are not followed.
The Sacramento Board of Supervisors adopted changes to the Sacramento County Code on April 9th to provide additional protections for our schools and parks. There is a $10,000 fine for using fireworks at schools, parks, and on the American River Parkway. Additional fines and penalties are outlined in the attached document.
