FCUSD Message to the Community, August 3

Dear FCUSD community:

We are very excited to start the 2022-23 school year! As a reminder, the first day of school is next week, Tuesday, August 9. 

We look forward to seeing our students next Tuesday and every school day for a great year of learning, making connections with friends old and new, and getting involved with school activities.

School and District messaging via email, text, and phone calls will be sent using the contact information in your PowerSchool account. If you are not receiving messages or you have changed your contact information, your school site can update that for you. Wish to opt-out of receiving a message? You will be given that option with each communication.

New elementary school schedules

Elementary school day schedules have been changed for the 2022-23 school year. Please watch for specific communication from your principal. For an overview, please visit this website.

Safety

Keeping our students and staff safe is our highest priority and we are continuously working to maintain and increase safety measures on all school campuses. 

Staff training in coordination with law enforcement and emergency first responders took place over the summer and will continue throughout the school year.

District leadership and our Coordinator of Safe Schools have established safety protocols and action plans for increasing safety this school year. These include:

  • Parents and visitors are required to sign in at the front office
  • All schools established points of entrance and exit for students coming onto and leaving school campuses
  • All classroom doors will remain locked during instruction
  • All schools will have a school safety team and school safety plan
  • Improved and increased cameras on school campuses
  • Increased signage on campuses to direct visitors to the front office
  • If you see something or hear something concerning - report it!

A Mental Health Professional Response Team is available for student(s) needs at all campuses. Your school site can direct you to this resource if you need assistance.

Additionally, if there is a bullying concern, please let a trusted adult on campus know or submit a bullying incident online using the Online Bullying Report. 

COVID safety

COVID safety measures in place at the end of last school year will continue unchanged this year and per public health requirements. As a reminder:

  • Monitor for symptoms
    • Please stay home until fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of medication. 
  • COVID tests are available upon request from your school
  • Masks are not required but are strongly recommended indoors 

For specific questions regarding your student, please contact your school’s health office.

Student use of cell phones and mobile communication devices at school

The Governing Board recognizes that the use of cell phones, smartphones, smart watches, and other mobile communication devices on campus may be beneficial to student learning and well-being but could also be disruptive of the instructional program. The Board permits limited use of mobile communication devices on campus in accordance with law and the following policy.

Students in grades TK-5 may not use cell phones, smartphones, smart watches or other mobile communication devices while on campus.  Devices must be turned off and placed out of sight during the school day.  Students who need to call parents may use phones located in the administrative office.

Students in grades 6-8 may use cell phones, smartphones, smart watches, or other mobile communication devices on campus during lunch, before first bell, and after last bell as long as the device is utilized in accordance with law and in accordance with BP/E 6163.4 Students Use of Technology.

Students in grades 9-12 may use cell phones, smartphones, smart watches or other mobile communication devices on campus during non-instructional time as long as the device is utilized in accordance with law and in accordance with BP/E 6163.4 Student Use of Technology.

Attention all PTA, PTO, and Booster presidents

Please attend an important meeting on Tuesday, August 16 to learn how to work within the District policies.  

Information in the School-Connected Organizations Handbook will be covered including regulations, certificates of insurance, facility use agreements, FCUSD board policies pertaining to PTA/PTO/Booster Clubs, and ways we can help. The annual application process will also be covered, and each organization can get support in completing the application for District approval.
