Update: FCUSD Celebrates Black History Month

February 4, 2021

Dear FCUSD community:

Black History is U.S. History and therefore, should be celebrated and highlighted year-round. However, the founding of Black History Month and the celebration of Black excellence was established to acknowledge the many achievements and contributions of Black Americans. For far too long, many of these have gone unnoticed, unrecognized, and untaught.

Most of us recognize names such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and Maya Angelou, but did you know about self-made millionaire Madam C.J. Walker, astronaut Mae C. Jemison, or open-heart surgeon Daniel Hale Williams? To learn more about them and many other Black Americans who have been instrumental in shaping America’s culture and success, please visit this website: www.biography.com/tag/black-history

In FCUSD, we acknowledge all of our young Black scholars, staff, and community members. Your perseverance, endurance, resilience, and dedication inspires us all.

Recent events in our country of racial injustice and violence have illuminated the urgency to challenge the status quo and examine biases that are negatively impacting our Black students, staff, and community members. In the words of Journalist and Civil Right Leader, Ida B. Wells, “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” Therefore, FCUSD is committed to being a change agent in the community and advancing equity throughout the organization.

Over the course of this month, we look forward to sharing stories of Black achievements and the significance of Black History Month. However, we want to be clear that uplifting and supporting Black students and staff is an ongoing District commitment with no end date.
