Update: Message to the FCUSD Community

May 6, 2021

Dear FCUSD Community: Please see the information below, with special highlights of our schools and students.

VDL and FHS named California Distinguished Schools

Congratulations to Vista del Lago and Folsom High for being recognized as California Distinguished Schools for 2021! They join Folsom Middle, which was named a 2021 Distinguished School in March. Head over to our Facebook post here to share your words of congratulations.

The California Department of Education (CDE) recognizes outstanding elementary and secondary education programs in alternate years, with schools holding the title for two years. In 2021, California is honoring middle and high schools. The Distinguished School recognition is awarded to schools based on performance and progress on state indicators. In March, the department honored 102 schools. After a review of the 2021 data, the CDE has identified an additional 120 schools, including Vista del Lago and Folsom High, to receive this high distinction.

Students awarded State Seal of Biliteracy

Each year, students who demonstrate they can read, write and speak in a language(s) other than English, may apply for the State Seal of Biliteracy, which if awarded becomes a designation on their high school diploma. Some fast facts on FCUSD student achievements this year include:

  • Folsom Cordova USD had 286 State Seal of Biliteracy Recipients, the most we have had in over 5 years.
  • 14 languages were represented by the seal recipients.
  • 38 seal recipients passed through a language exam, demonstrating listening, speaking, reading and writing at a high level equivalent to AP world language classes.
  • 10 seal recipients received the Seal of Biliteracy in two languages other than English!

Kids Day in the Park

On Saturday, April 24 hundreds of families came out to the reimagined Kids Day in the Park drive-through event in Rancho Cordova. This yearly event put on by the Cordova Community Council is all about celebrating young children and providing them with a fun day filled with activities. Visual attractions ranged from seeing live animals, such as a camel, alligator, monkey and zebra, to live dancing demonstrations.

Over 60 exhibitors were on hand to greet the visitors, including FCUSD representatives from Homeless Services, ASES after school programs, Student Care, Preschool, Adult Education and the Communications department. To see pictures of the day, check out our post on Twitter HERE.
