What is the Community Readers Program?
The FCUSD Community Readers program is designed to provide additional reading support for students in grades 1–3, while nurturing their confidence and enthusiasm for reading. Volunteers spend 30 minutes once a week, reading with a student and listening to them read aloud. Your time can make a big difference in a child’s literacy journey!
Program Highlights:
- Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays, 4:30–5:00 p.m.
- Locations: All Elementary ASES Sites – Cordova Gardens, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa, Peter J. Shields, Rancho Cordova, White Rock, Williamson
- Fall Session: Sept 9 – Dec 12 | Spring Session: Jan 12 – May 8
- No teaching experience required – tip sheets and FCUSD staff support provided.

How to Become a Community Reader
New Volunteers:
- Attend Community Readers Orientation:
- Complete Live Scan form:
- Form & list of locations available (FCUSD-issued Live Scan forms are available at the District Front Office or can be picked up during orientation.)
- Complete TB test for application (Valid for 60 days):
- Free TB Clinic one Monday every month 3:00-4:30 pm - no appt required (8/11, 9/15, 10/20, 11/3, 12/1, 1/12, 2/2, 3/2, 4/13, 5/4):
- 1965 Birkmont Drive, Rancho Cordova

- Submit online Volunteer Application in Raptor:
- Upload TB test results
Current Category 2 Volunteers / Cleared Employees:
- Attend Community Readers Orientation:
- Complete a Volunteer Conversion Requisition Letter (This is a new requirement for all current volunteers and employees beginning a new assignment.)
- Submit online Volunteer Application in Raptor:
