Make a lasting difference in a child’s life, one story at a time! We’re looking for caring volunteers to read with students and help them build confidence, fluency, and a lifelong love of reading.

What is the Community Readers Program?

The FCUSD Community Readers program is designed to provide additional reading support for students in grades 1–3, while nurturing their confidence and enthusiasm for reading. Volunteers spend 30 minutes once a week, reading with a student and listening to them read aloud. Your time can make a big difference in a child’s literacy journey!

Program Highlights:

• 30-minute sessions on Thursday afternoons between 1:30 p.m.–3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
• Locations: Cordova Gardens Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa, Mather Heights Elementary, Navigator Elementary, Peter J. Shields, Rancho Cordova, Riverview STEM Academy, White Rock, and Williamson.
• Fall Session: Program begins September 17
• No teaching experience required – tip sheets and FCUSD staff support provided. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How to Become a Community Reader

New Volunteers: 

• Attend Community Readers Orientation:
  • Sign up here to attend an Orientation.
• Complete Live Scan form:
  • Form & list of locations available (FCUSD-issued Live Scan forms are available at the District Front Office or can be picked up during orientation.)
• Complete TB test for application:
  • Free TB Clinic one Monday every month 3:00-4:30 pm - no appt required (8/10, 9/14, 10/5, 11/2, 12/7, 1/4, 2/8, 3/8, 4/12, 5/3):
    • 1965 Birkmont Drive, Rancho Cordova
• Complete Mandated Reporter Training
  •  Please ensure your training is current and up to date. Volunteer Services will verify completion of your Mandated Reporter Training through Risk Management records.
    • Suspected Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training
• Submit online Volunteer Application in Raptor:
