FCUSD Board Briefs and Updates, June 8
June 8, 2022

Dear FCUSD Community,

The Special Board Meeting Study Session took place on Saturday, June 4. Highlights of topics and visioning that were discussed may be found below.

Next steps for STEM and STEAM programs

STEM, which stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering, Math,” and STEAM which adds in “Art,” are areas of instructional focus at many of our schools. A presentation was given on the elementary feeder patterns to the middle schools in Rancho Cordova, and the process over the upcoming school year to identify elementary schools interested in pursuing a STEM or STEAM format and school identity.

A presentation for STEM and STEAM next steps can be viewed by clicking here.

Career Technical Education (CTE) in Rancho Cordova

Career Technical Education (CTE) programs are robust in Rancho Cordova. While full CTE pathways are offered in high school, students begin preparing in elementary school, with an instructional focus on STEAM/STEAM. In middle school, students participate in Project Lead the Way, STEM/STEAM, and introductory CTE courses. From there, students may enroll in CTE Programs of Study at Cordova High School to prepare for college and career readiness.

Facilities and Programmatic Master Planning

As both Folsom and Rancho Cordova cities expand with new housing building, FCUSD has planned new schools to be built accordingly. The catalyst that launches a new school to be built is based on the number of students that it would serve. This is to ensure operational viability and comprehensive educational programming.  The numbers of students needed for a new school opening are:

  • 250 for an elementary school
  • 650 for a middle school
  • 850 for a high school

Over the next 12 years, and as city growth ensues, FCUSD staff projects the following schools to be constructed within the SFID 3 (Measure M) area.

It is important to note that opening dates may fluctuate depending on the rate of housing construction and cash flow.

  • Mangini Ranch Elementary 2021-2022
  • Folsom Planning Area Elem #2 2024-2025
  • Folsom Planning Area Elem #3 2027-2028
  • Folsom Planning Area High, Phase 1 2028-2029
  • Rio del Oro Elem #1 2029-2030
  • Glenborough Elem #1 2030-2031
  • Folsom Planning Area Middle 2030-2031
  • Rio del Oro Elem #2 2033-2034

The full presentation staff presented with building plans for future schools can be seen by clicking on this link.
