FCUSD Message to the Community, Feb 14

February 14, 2022

Dear FCUSD Community:

Today, Dr. Mark Ghaly, California Health, and Human Services Secretary led a press conference for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) where he outlined, “the current COVID-19 data trends, provided context for state masking requirements, and previewed an approach to keep schools open and thriving.” As COVID-19 cases are rapidly declining in our state, Dr. Ghaly stated, “Masking requirements will expire as conditions improve. Masks are not intended to be in place in perpetuity. The question is when not if.” As of today, there is, “no change to the CDPH school masking requirement,” but, “on February 28, 2022, CDPH will reassess data/conditions for a future change to the statewide school masking requirement.”

As a reminder, FCUSD is obligated to follow all CDPH requirements and guidelines, and to be clear, at this point in time, FCUSD as a school district, its schools, staff, or board, does not have the legal decision-making authority to change, overturn, ignore or not enforce this state requirement for all California schools. Dr. Ghaly clearly stated that for all “districts in the state, the state requirements apply.”

We understand that staff, families, and students may have strong emotions and questions about the CDPH COVID-19 safety requirements and measures, including California’s state masking requirement for schools. We are hearing about statewide protests taking place against maintaining the statewide masking requirement for schools.

If families do choose to participate in these protests, please note that protestors cannot disrupt or interfere with school operations by blocking entrances or exits, nor can the protest take place on school grounds.

As we have stated, FCUSD looks forward to returning to pre-COVID school experiences as soon as possible. Our continued focus is on excellent instruction and educational opportunities for our students.

People may disagree about the methods schools are required to follow, but I hope we can all agree that keeping our schools safe and open is what is best for our students. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
