December 18, 2020

School Reopening Updates

Elementary:

Board members discussed and approved that all elementary schools will temporarily move to full Distance Learning for one week after Winter Break, out of an abundance of caution, and to maximize social separation after the holidays. Students participating in Elementary Hybrid will return to campus on January 12.

Special education services after Winter Break:

Any existing, self-contained SDC cohorts on campus now will continue to meet on campus beginning January 5, and will not be on Distance Learning for that first week.

Food Services:

All meal services will continue as “grab and go” curbside pick-up as usual, at all the school sites.

It is also important to mention that moving to temporary Distance Learning does not hinder the District’s return to Elementary Hybrid in-person learning, per public health.

Secondary schools reopening plan:

The Board approved the reopening of secondary schools to align with the California Department of Public Health’s directives for reopening schools, which includes a two-week waiting period once Sacramento County has been moved to Red Tier status. For more information, please visit the CDPH website.

For instance, in order for secondary schools to reopen the week of January 18, Sacramento County would need to be in Red Tier status by the week of January 4.

Currently, our county is in the Purple Tier and as you are probably aware, the numbers of COVID-19 positive cases have been increasing in Sacramento County. We cannot predict when these numbers will decrease and when we will be moved to Red Tier status. However, we can plan and be ready when that day comes. The District has made plans to reopen secondary schools, with safety measures in place, PPE, advanced AV equipment, and staff training.

District leadership is closely following the metrics by which the state may move Sacramento County to Red Tier status, and are following current health and safety guidelines to be prepared to pivot to in-person Hybrid instruction.

COVID-19 Dashboard*

The FCUSD COVID-19 Dashboard will not be updated during Winter Break. We will resume reporting on January 6. Please visit the Sacramento County Health Department’s website to find resources and information on COVID-19 during the holidays.

*Note: Numbers for Cordova Meadows were inadvertently omitted and have been updated as of 12/18.

Reminder

  • All schools will be closed for Winter Break: December 21 – January 1
  • The Education Service Center will be closed: December 22-25, and January 1
