    Honors & Accelerated Pathways in Math for

     Folsom Middle School(FMS) & Sutter Middle School(SMS)

    For placement for current 5th Grade students into Course 1 Honors, which comprises the essential standards of 6th grade and some of 7th grade:

    Students are automatically placed in Course 1 Honors if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

    • CAASPP Overall Level 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2022-23 (last school year)- Levels are posted in PowerSchool under “Score Reports".
    • Grades of As and/or Bs for the most recent two consecutive grading periods
    • Renaissance Scaled Score at or above Level 3

     

    For Current 5th Grade students who wish to challenge Course 1 Honors:
    Students may take the challenge test if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

    • CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2022-23 (last school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”
    • Grade of As for two recent grading periods
    • Renaissance Scaled Score at  Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)

    Students must earn a minimum score of 80% in the challenge test in order to be placed in Course 2 Honors, which comprises Common Core State Standards of 7th AND 8th grade.    

     

    *The challenge test for Course 1 Honors is offered at the students' elementary sites and the results are notified to FMS by the district. For details about this test, please reach out to your child's elementary school. FMS does not have any information about the details of this test.

     

    For current 6th and 7th grade honors students who wish to challenge the next math honors course shown in the flowchart:
    Students may take the challenge test if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

    • CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2022-23(previous school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”
    • Grade of As for two recent grading periods
    • Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher).

    Students must earn a minimum score of 80% in the attempted challenge test in order to be placed in the next honors course.

     

    Current 6th grade Course 1 (grade level course) students may be placed in Course 2 Honors if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

    • CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2022-23 (previous school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”
    • Grade of As for two recent grading periods
    • Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)

     

    Current 7th grade Course 2 (grade level course) students may be placed in IM1 if all 4 criteria listed below are met:

    • CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2022-23 (previous school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”
    • Grade of As for two recent grading periods.
    • Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4  (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)
    • Passed the challenge test for Course 3 with a minimum of 80%

     

    For placement in honors courses at FMS for new students from out of the district in California or out of state or country:

    • Students will be placed accordingly in the relevant honors course after verification of transcripts and course description of the last course completed at the previous school.
    • Verification will be done by the math department.

     

    • All students who are placed in the Honors and Accelerated Pathway must maintain a minimum of 80% in both semesters and a CAASPP score of 3 or 4.
    • Students will be encouraged to follow the grade level pathway if a minimum of 80% is not maintained in both the semesters and a CAASPP score of 3 or 4.

     

    Details of Challenge Test 

     

    • Challenge test is offered ONCE a school year, closer to the end of the second semester.
    • In an academic school year, students may attempt ONLY ONE challenge test in chronological order shown in the math flowchart.
    • Practice tests or study guides for the challenge tests are not offered by FMS or by the district.
    • Students who wish to challenge a course must meet all the criteria specified for that course.
    • Students who meet the requirements to take the challenge test must register during the sign-up period.
    • Makeups and retakes of challenge tests will not be offered.
    • The challenge test for Course 1 Honors for qualifying current fifth graders from FCUSD (incoming sixth graders at FMS) are offered this test at their elementary schools at the end of their fifth grade; results of this test are notified by the district to the elementary schools.
    • Challenge tests for Course 2 Honors, Course 3, Integrated Math 1 and Integrated Math 2 are offered at FMS for qualifying students who are currently enrolled at FMS. Results of these tests are notified by email by FMS math department to the parents/guardians of the students who took the test. The scores of the test are not released. The answer sheets of the students are not released after they are graded.
    • Integrated Math 2 is only offered to current qualifying 7th graders of FMS.

     

    • ***Current 8th Grade students who wish to challenge the next math course need to reach out to the counseling department of the high school they enroll in.
