Students will learn algorithmic thinking, expression, and be able to understand basic principles of programming logic. They will learn to communicate complex ideas simply and solve problems logically. Topics include computer hardware, troubleshooting, computer security, networking, and program development. Students will engage in several in-depth projects to demonstrate the real-world application of computing and programming.
High Level Outline of Units:
- Programming with Alice
- Digital Information
- The Internet
- Cyber Security
- Workplace skills and behaviours
- Robotics and control systems
Materials:
Every student is expected to bring their notebook, PAWS-Port, Chromebook and a pen/pencil to class.
every day. If the student has difficulty getting these materials at this time, please have the student talk to me and arrangements will be made to supply the student for the start of the year. Students will be given an Engineering Notebook – quadrille grid, bound (similar to Office Depot Item #323685). If they lose it, they are expected to replace it at their own expense. Spiral bound are NOT recommended.
Additionally, the following materials would be helpful for the student to maximize his/her learning
- Computer at home with internet and Alice (free software) installed
Textbook: "Alice 3 to Java - Learning Creative Programming through Storytelling and Gaming" Wanda Dann, Don Slater, Laura Paoletti, Dave Culyba
College Credit Opportunity:
CSP has been approved by California University Sacramento State (CSUS) for 5 units of credit in class "CSC 10 - Introduction to Programming Logic" via the ACE (Accelerated College Entrance) program. ONLY juniors and seniors with A or B grades both semesters are eligible for this credit. Registration and a small fee is required to earn this credit. More details will be given later in the year.
