A growing coalition of Folsom Cordova students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community leaders - known as the Equity Advisory Committee - provide input on ways the District can better serve its diverse school communities and achieve equitable outcomes for its most vulnerable students. Among the challenges the Equity Advisory Committee is tackling include the fact that the District’s African American students, foster youth, and students with disabilities are suspended and expelled, or chronically absent, at rates far higher than their peers.
In our ongoing efforts to strenghten community within the Folsom Cordova Unified School District, our Equity Advisor Committe developed the following Commitment Statement:
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District fosters the safety, success, and wellness of all students by creating a positive school culture and celebrating the power of diversity and differences. Our schools, students, families, and employees will treat each other with respect, and refuse to tolerate behavior that causes harm. Hateful and discriminatory actions or words – which target a person’s actual or perceived race, ethnicity, culture, heritage, gender, sex, sexual orientation, immigration status, socioeconomic status, physical/mental attributes, or religious beliefs or practices - will not be tolerated in our school communities.
To address the persistent, disproportionate outcomes of our most vulnerable children, our focus areas include:
- Implicit bias training for staff and leaders across our entire school district.
- Restorative practices training that will build our schools’ capacity to help students reflect on behaviors and increase time in classrooms. There are and will continue to be serious consequences for serious behavior, but we must also use all the tools we have to help disrupt cycles of inequity.
- Training for students and staff to support social-emotional and mental health needs in our schools.
