    Navigator Elementary School

     

     

     

    Dear Families:

     

        Welcome! I am are very excited to be working with you and your child this year.

     

    My name is Christine Moreno and most of my students call me Mrs. M.  I am married with two children both of whom are in college.  This is my third year to Navigator Elementary nd I love it!!! Before coming to Navigator, I taught an Independent Living Skills Class for three years at Folsom High school.  I hold a multi-subject and both a mild-moderate and moderate-severe credential. Before pursuing my teaching credential I worked as an instructional aide in moderate to severe classrooms for eight years.  I  love the students that I get to work work each day.  I am excited to begin a wonderful new year together!

     

       

     

    Teachers: We have three great Autism classes to meet the individual needs of our students. We are a team and will use this to our advantage to meet the needs of our students. If a students’ needs are better met in another classroom (due to increased numbers in one class, etc) we are a fluid unit and will ensure all of our students get the best educational experience.

     

    Homework:  Folsom-Cordova’s elementary math and language arts homework have aligned and will follow the “get it right” lens that the district has recently adopted for the 2018/2019 school year.  Current research findings which requires homework to :

    1. Be brief

    2. Be research-aligned and contain standards-based tasks

    3. Not be a project

    4. Reinforce skills already taught in the classroom and be at the student’s independent level.

       

    A seperate note will be sent home regarding homework .  

     

    Arrival/Dismissal Times: Our school day is 8:20-1:52-1st/send graders and 10:30-2:37 for Kindergarteners.  .  School starts at 8:20 sharp!   If you are tardy to school, Navigator policy requires you to check your student into the office.  We are mindful of life’s unexpected emergenices however when a student is late, we will need to stop teaching to get your child from the office.    In order to avoid added stress or frustration for your child during dismissal time, we ask that you plan to pick up your child by 11:45 pm if he/she will not riding the bus.  We often have staff,district meetings or personal obligations that require us to leave immediatley after school. Thank you in advance for adhering to our policy.

     

    Illness: Being at school daily is important! However, if your child is sick please keep them at home. If you send your child to school sick it spreads throughout the kids and the staff. The illness policy is posted on the district’s website.

     

    Spirit Day: We have spirit day every Friday. Please have your child wear red, white, and blue or a Navigator t-shirt to show his/her school spirit.

     

    Dress code: Please make sure your child adheres to the dress code. They may not wear flip flops to school. If you have any questions please go to the website.

     

    Library: We will be going to the library one time per week. Students can checkout a book but they will leave it at school. They have the option to look at their book every day if they choose. We only have a librarian a few hours a week so we aren’t officially checking them out. We always encourage you to read with your child as research has proven the significant benefits of enriched language and learning with as little as 10 minutes per day!

     

    Speech and OT: Our speech therapist is LeAnna Heinrich and our OT is Trish Valdez. Both practive a “push-in” therapy model with pull-out as needed.  Current research shows this is best practice and has shown us years of amazing results.

     

    IEP Meetings:  In order to establish an efficient IEP process that will give us the opportunity to be proactive in supporting our students, we will be holding our Annual, Initial and Triennial IEP’s on Wednesdays and have scheduled all of these meetings in advance for the school year.  Meeting notices will be sent in a timely manner.  Please mark your calendar with the assigned meeting time and date and please make an attempt to attend the allocated time so that we can be efficient in our scheduling process.  If you must reschedule, please contact the child’s teacher as soon as possible.  

    The Special Education staff at Navigator Elementary appreciates your cooperation and your understanding of what it takes to manage a quality program.

     

    Lastly, we  strive for collaboration with all of our families. We realize there might be questions or concerns you might have regarding your student.  Please contact your student’s current teacher either by phone or email.  We feel  communication is an important part of our home to school partnership.  We recognize  a parent/teacher conference might need to be scheduled  as needed, not just at report card time and/or IEP time.
