Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) is a district program with a focus on the identification of students who are gifted (grades 3-5 elementary schools) and meeting their needs through specialized curriculum resources, instructional strategies, and teacher training.

For questions regarding GATE specifically, please email our GATE Facilitator, Ms. Shawn Kivley, at the email link provided on this page.  If you have questions for one of our Academy for Advanced Learning schools, often referred to as GATE academies, please contact the specific school using one of the links below.  Thank you!

We hope you explore the many resources available on our website!

GATE Testing:  For the 2021 - 2022 school year our district will be testing ALL of our 3rd and 4th grade students since we missed last year's 3rd grade students due to COVID restrictions.  At this time, parents of 3rd and 4th grade students, as well as those who are new to our distirict who have 5th grade students, should have received a parent letter.  If you have not received the letter, please contact your school site.  The letter is an OPT OUT letter to withdraw your student(s) from testing.  We must receive this letter no later than Friday, October 1, 2021.  If you want your child tested for GATE you do not need to return anything.  The testing window will be during the weeks of Oct. 4 - Nov. 18. Currently our testing department is working extremely hard to develop schedules and work out logistics for all of our elementary schools and will notifiy schools of their scheudle as soon as possible. If your child is absent on the day of testing at your school site the testing department will set up make-ups once all schools have been tested.  The test will be a nonverbal, culturally neutral assessment, which is accepted as being well suited for identifying gifted and talented students.  The only preparation needed is a good night sleep and a good breakfast.

GATE Testing Results:   Once all schools have been given the assessment, the testers will have the task of scoring all assessments.  This will take some time.  You will be notified by December break if your child has or has not qualified.  No score will be given.  This assessment is scored in a qualified/not qualified manner.  However, if you child does not qualify for GATE, that does not mean that s/he isn't a hard worker and a high achiever.  Students who are high achievers and become quite successful as adults regardless of their label at the elementary level.  Please praise your child for doing his/her best.

PLEASE NOTE:  If your child qualifies for GATE, your child will be supported in his / her current classroom.  Additionally, this does not guarantee admission to one of our academy schools.  ALL academies have an appication process that will require parents to contact the schools individually.  Each school will update their website when the application process opens.  See information below.

Academy Applications All academy students will be admitted through an application process.  Please check the school websites listed below in November and early December for application process and deadlines for the 2022-2023 school year.  The academies will do their own assessments, usually in January, and alert parents of their child's acceptance around the end of February so you can make plans for the following school year.

For all Academy questions, please contact the specific schools by clicking the links below.  The GATE Deparment does not handle the academy applications and enrollment as each school's process matches their needs.
