Engineering, arts and ingenuity at annual celebration
Folsom High freshman Wade Kiesaw and his three teammates worked for months to perfect their built-from-scratch hovercraft, testing different strategies, theories and materials. Their most successful effort used two leaf blower motors that blew air into a nylon tarp attached to a wooden platform.
On a sunny Friday afternoon, students and staff - even Principal Kathryn Allaman - enjoyed the rewards of these students’ engineering efforts, taking dozens of turns giving it a ride.
“A lot of people have loved it,” Wade said, as he and his teammates - Sherin Khoygani, Spencer Goles, and Hebah Haque - helped people on and off the vehicle. “Especially people who have ridden it.”
Folsom High’s campus was buzzing with student ingenuity and creativity during two annual celebrations on April 17, demonstrating the strong connection between academics and the arts.
The daylong engineering challenge drew about 200 students from Folsom and Cordova high schools to campus to show off their achievements in science and technology. And the simultaneous student art show plastered stunning student paintings, photographs and other creations across campus while student musicians entertained teens, staff and families.
Across campus, senior Chloe Bub meticulously worked out details of elaborate sidewalk chart mural: a recreation of the Back to the Future movie poster.
“Because it’s 2015, and that’s the year they travel to in the movie,” she said.
