Rancho Cordova, Calif. - Folsom Cordova Unified School District held its 2nd Parent Summit at Mills Middle School on April 5 to inform parents of the technology, programs and resources FCUSD has to offer.
The Summit began in the cafeteria, where district officials and parents gathered to discuss the agenda for the day, which included a preview of the SBAC [the new California Assessment] aligned with the Common Core Standards]. Next, parents were separated into three groups. Each group would attend a different workshop where they were given information on topics of interest and ways to support their children. The groups rotated every 30 minutes in accordance with their registration card.
The first workshop was given by ELL Lead Teacher, Marie Pawleck; GATE Lead Teacher, Lory Winford; Early Childhood Coordinator, Jackie Wyse; and Secondary Language Arts Lead Teacher, Lynn Blodgett. This workshop informed parents how FCUSD programs are changing and what new programs have been added. Parents expressed their interest in programs such as GATE, Montessori, The Academy for Advanced Learning, The new STEM Academy [opening in the fall] and The Spanish Language Magnet Program.
The second workshop was directed by Mills Middle School Councilor, Eric Mejia and it demonstrated to parents how they could stay updated on the technology their children would be utilizing at school. Since some FCUSD schools, including Mills Middle School, recently received chromebooks [which are personal computers], parents were told how the chromebooks would be used and for what purposes. Mr. Mejia also helped parents make Powerschool Parent Portals, which are online accounts that can be used to check student grades, attendance, and citizenship. He also demonstrated how to access those accounts and keep themselves informed on how their children are performing in school.
The final workshop had to do with Lexia and it was given by Math Elementary Lead Teacher, Mary Beth Haness; Vicky Boudouris; and Director of Categorical Programs and Grants, Elena Cabrera.

Lexia is a computer program used by teachers to help improve reading skills. Students work with the program according to their level and then to advance to the next level depending on their progress. Students can work on Lexia at school and also access it at home for extra practice. Mrs. Haness also talked about the new Common Core Standards and how they will change the way students are taught.
